I have heard about Ms. Williams for a few years and people rave about her books. Without a doubt, she writes some beautiful prose and is very passionate about her topics. Sadly, I did not enjoy The Hour of Land. Part of that may be my fault in not researching this book enough before buying it. I was expecting a book that would provide the history of the various national parks and that was filled with gorgeous descriptions of landscape and sights. While there was some of that, much of the book was about the politics of the national parks, climate change, and how we are destroying the earth. These are certainly important topics, but I prefer not to read an entire book about them. If those things interest you, then The Hour of Land will be a five star book for you.Ms. Williams focused on 12 national parks throughout the United States. She travels to the parks with some members of her family, friends, and people she admires. Her interviews with other people who are visiting the parks or working in the parks are some of the more interesting parts of the book. I was less fond of the chapters that focused on climate and political activism. The writing and tone is too strident for my taste. The chapters I enjoyed most were about Grand Teton National Park, Gettysburg, and Glacier National Park. These chapters focused more on people and experiences within the parks. Gettysburg was particularly thought provoking in terms of how we justify war. I was looking forward to reading about the Arctic National Park in Alaska, but this chapter was a bizarre collection of short snippets of writing and random thoughts that were difficult to follow.On the positive side, I did learn a variety of new things. Some of the material gave me something to ponder. And sections of writing are simply beautiful. Despite my frustration with this book I am interested in reading two more of her books, Refuge and When Women Were Birds. I will just need to wait awhile. Terry Tempest Williams is an environmentalist, author, and poet who tours a number of National Parks and shares her deep spiritual experiences there, her love of nature, her outrage at the destruction of our treasures, and even the history we need to understand. Her writing often is poetic and stirring. Occasionally this format loses the reader, but is never dull. One comes away with a deeper appreciation of these American treasures.
